1.Introduction :
As a BAMS student, I visit many Ayurvedic clinics to learn. During one visit, I met a patient (let’s call him Rajrao* to keep his name private) who had a diabetic foot ulcer. Talking to him and others with diabetes problems made me curious—how does Ayurveda help manage diabetes?
To learn more, I read trusted sources and spoke with experienced Ayurvedic doctors. Based on what I learned, I’ve shared some simple Ayurvedic tips for diabetes care in this blog. My aim is to explain things in an easy, friendly way—but always remember, Ayurveda works best alongside your doctor’s advice, not as a replacement!

2. Understanding the Delayed Healing of Diabetic Wounds(Science Simplified)
##Ayurvedic Perspective :
According to Ayurveda, health depends on the balance of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. A Vata-Kapha imbalance can lead to:
• Dryness and tissue weakness due to poor blood circulation.
• As described in Charak Samhita (Ch. 28), ama (toxins) block srotas—the body’s channels—disrupting nutrient flow to wounds. Specifically, Rasavaha Srotas (nutrient channels) and Raktavaha Srotas (blood vessels) may become obstructed.
• Rakta Dushti (blood impurity), which can cause poor oxygenation, pus formation, and tissue death (necrosis).
##Modern view :
1) Vascular complications - Diabetes damages blood vessels (angiopathy), reducing blood flow to extremities (peripheral arterial disease).
- Less oxygen and nutrients reach the wound, impairing tissue repair.
2) Nerve damage : high blood sugar may damage nerves it result into loss of sensation.
3) High blood sugar interferes with healing process - Excess glucose may damage collagen production. Which is a key protein for wound healing process.
3.Proven Ayurvedic Remedies (with detailed research)
###1. Turmeric (Curcuma longa )
-It reduces oxidative stress, inflammation, and enhances collagen synthesis.
- Curcumin Stimulates fibroblast proliferation (critical for wound closure).
- Key Research:
1)A 2019 study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that turmeric significantly improved wound healing in diabetic rats, supporting its use as a natural therapy (PubMed, 2019).
2)Another study in Wound Repair and Regeneration highlighted curcumin’s role in accelerating tissue repair (PubMed, n.d.).
- Ayurvedic Use:
- Topical: Mix turmeric powder with honey/ghee for ulcers.
###2. Neem (Azadirachta indica)
-Mechanism :
•Neem shows antibacterial property against bacteria like Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus which are common in diabetic wounds.
•Nimbidin compound found in neem known for its insecticidal and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Key research :
• Neem accelerates wound contraction in diabetic rats (2017, Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine)(https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2221169116302263)
-Ayurvedic Use:
- Neem oil for infected wounds.
- Oral: Neem capsules (controls blood sugar + prevents infections).
###3. Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)
Mechanism:
1)It shows a Immunomodulatory property.
In simple and easy term I will say it boost white blood cells for faster healing
2)Berberine compound found in guduchi may help in lowering the blood sugar.
3)However, more research is necessary. Historically it was the part of Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
Key research:
• A 2018 study published in the *Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine* highlights Guduchi’s potential in wound healing.
- Source: [Guduchi’s wound-healing effects - PMC](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6138379/)
Ayurvedic use :
Guduchi satva is taken 1to 2g with honey.
For tissue repair.
###4). Aloe Vera (Kumari)
-Mechanism
Aloe vera contains glucomannan, a polysaccharide, and gibberellin, a growth hormone. Hormone which are known to stimulate collegen production.
Cooling effect of aloe reduces ulcer pain
Key research :
A 2020 study published in the *Journal of Diabetes Research* compared the efficacy of aloe vera gel with silver sulfadiazine in treating diabetic ulcers (NCBI, 2020).
Ayurvedic use :
1) Direct application (Topical use )
Fresh alo gel is extacted from leaf and applied directly wounds
2) Aloe + turmeric paste
This combination enhances antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects (PMC, n.d.).
3) Aloe + honey dressing
4) Aloevera juice for internal healing
5) Ayurvedic Formulations :
•Kumari Asava
•Aloe based oils
(Note : diabetes should moniter blood sugar level as alone may increase the hypoglycemic effect.
Consult a ayurvedic doctor for severe
Or infected wounds)
###5). Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia)
Mechanism :
•It works as a blood purifier by removing toxins causing delayed healing
•Act as antimicrobial against wound pathogen.
Key research : -
- A 2015 study in the *Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine* demonstrated that Manjistha root extract enhances wound closure (NCBI, 2015).
Ayurvedic use :
Manjistha may help manage high blood sugar levels due to its bitter (tikta) taste and potential to improve impaired insulin function.
