Namaste friends,

Introduction :

Ayurveda is not just a science of treating illness; it is knowledge of living a life, a knowledge of the balance of life. It has a knowledge of the art of perfect living.

Among its most treasured and powerful therapies is Nasya—the administration of medicinal preparations through the nasal passage.

We all know our head is a common centre of our entire body.

It is a house of our brain, our five senses and our consciousness.

Just as we service a complex machine through its most critical access points, Ayurveda services the body through the doorway of the nose, offering direct access to the brain and the entire upper body, or the Urdhwajatru.

Today, let's dive deep into the wisdom of the Charak Samhita, specifically from the Matrashiteeya Adhyaya  of the Sutrasthanam, to

- understand the magic, the warnings, and the incredible benefits of this practice, particularly with a special herbal oil known as Anu Tailam.

The Warning: What Happens When You Overdo It?

• Just like we have heard Spider-Man's famous dialogue, 'With great power comes great responsibility'... If we talk about it here,Ayurveda tells us what we should not do."

• The text first warns us about the excessive use of nasal therapies, specifically Dhumrapana (medicated smoking), but the principle applies to any forceful or incorrect nasal administration.

The sage Charak says:

(Charak Samhita, Sutrasthanam 5/54-55)

In simple terms, if nasal therapy is overdone or done incorrectly:

•Your palate, head, and throat become dry and inflamed.

•You experience excessive thirst and confusion.

•It can lead to increased bleeding (like nosebleeds).

• You might feel extreme dizziness and even fainting spells.

• Most crucially, your sense organs (Indriyas) become weakened and damaged.

This warning sets the stage, highlighting that Nasya is a powerful tool that must be used with respect, knowledge, and precision.

The Perfect Time for Rejuvenation: Ritucharya for Nasya

- Ayurveda is deeply connected to the rhythms of nature.

- It prescribes specific times of the year when Nasya is most beneficial, helping to prevent seasonal imbalances before they even begin.

The text advises:

"рд╡рд░्рд╖े рд╡рд░्рд╖ेрд╜рдгुрддैрд▓ं рдЪ рдХाрд▓ेрд╖ु рдд्рд░िрд╖ु рдиाрд╡рдпेрдд् । рдк्рд░ाрд╡ृрдб्рд╢рд░рдж्рд╡рд╕рди्рддेрд╖ु рдЧрддрдоेрдШे рдирднрд╕्рддрд▓े ॥релрем॥"

(Charak Samhita, Sutrasthanam 5/56)

This means:

"Every year, one should administer Anu Tailam Nasya during three specific seasons: Varsha (monsoon), Sharad (autumn), and Vasant (spring), when the sky is clear of clouds."

Why these seasons?

• This particular timing is given by considering how our body reacts to the outside environment.

For example

- These are times when Vata and Kapha doshas are most likely to accumulate in the head and sinus regions, leading to allergies, sinusitis, headaches, and brain fog.

- Regular Nasya during these transitions clears these channels, ensuring smooth energy flow and preventing disease.

The Incredible Benefits of Nasya : A Gift for Our Senses

• Now, let's get to the amazing rewards of practicing regular, correct Nasya.

• The benefits described are amazing.

• The results it promises are incredible.

(Charak Samhita, Sutrasthanam 5/57-58)

For the person

who performs Nasya at the right time and in the prescribed manner:

• The strength of their eyes, nose, and ears is never diminished.

• Their hair and beard do not turn grey or white prematurely.

• The hair does not fall out; in fact, it grows exceptionally well.

- But that's not all. Nasya is also a powerful therapeutic treatment:

"рдорди्рдпाрд╕्рддрдо्рднः рд╢िрд░ःрд╢ूрд▓рдорд░्рджिрддं рд╣рдиुрд╕ंрдЧ्рд░рд╣ः ।

рдкीрдирд╕ाрд░्рдзाрд╡рднेрджौ рдЪ рд╢िрд░ःрдХрдо्рдкрд╢्рдЪ рд╢ाрдо्рдпрддि ॥релреп॥"

(Charak Samhita, Sutrasthanam 5/59)

It helps alleviate conditions like:

• Manyastambha (Stiff neck/Torticollis)

• Shirashoola (Chronic headaches)

• Ardita (Facial paralysis)

• Hanusangrah (Lockjaw/ TMJ disorders)

• Peenasa (Chronic sinusitis/rhinitis)

• Ardhavabhedaka (Migraine/ Hemicrania)

• Shirah Kamp (Head tremors)

The deep nourishment from Nasya therapy

• The benefits hit different.

• We're talking next-level nourishment for your brain cells and even unlocking a smoother, deeper voice

(Charak Samhita, Sutrasthanam 5/60-62)

This explains that Nasya provides superior nourishment to the veins, bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons of the skull. This leads to:

• A bright, clear, and well-nourished face.

• A voice that is deep, clear, stable, and melodious.

• Clarity and enhanced strength in all sense organs.

• Immunity against diseases affecting the upper body (above the clavicles).

• Most remarkably, aging does not easily affect the sense organs. This means delayed greying, fewer wrinkles, and maintained sensory acuity as you age.

The Royal Formulation: How to Make Anu Tailam

The given text provides a detailed recipe for creating this powerful medicinal oil. This is a complex process, best done by experienced Ayurvedic practitioners, but understanding it shows the depth of Ayurvedic pharmacy.

(For curious readers, a note:

- The recipe given below is a classical recipe provided only for reference;that is, just for knowledge.

- There is no need to try it at home. You can get the medicated oil(Anu Tailam) directly from the market.)

The formulation includes over 30 herbs, each with a specific purpose. Some key ingredients are:

Chandan (Sandalwood), Agaru (Agarwood), Tamalpatra (Cinnamon leaves): Cooling and calming.

Bala, Ashwagandha, Shatavari: Nutritive tonics.

Bilva (Bael), Musta (Nutgrass), Vacha (Calamus): Digestive and cleansing.

Jivanti, Licorice, Pippali: Rejuvenative and nourishing.

The Process (Simplified):

1. Take equal parts of all the dried herbs and make a coarse powder.

2. Boil this powder in 100 parts of rainwater until the decoction reduces to 1/10th of its volume.

3. Filter this concentrated decoction.

4. Now, take 1 part of Sesame oil and add 1/10th part of this decoction to it.

5. Heat this mixture until only the oil remains and all the water has evaporated.

6. Repeat this process of adding the decoction and evaporating it nine more times. This transfers the therapeutic properties of the herbs into the oil.

7. On the tenth processing, instead of the decoction, add an equal quantity of goat's milk and process it again.

This intricate process, called Paka, creates a deeply potent and bio-available oil that can penetrate subtle channels.

The Practice: How to Perform Anu Taila Nasya at Home (The Simple Way)

So far we have seen what Nasya uses, how the medicated oil is made, and the benefits it has for the body... But the most important thing we need to know is how to perform Nasya at home.

But always remember, having expert guidance is very important, even though I have explained all the procedures below... Still, you must at least consult a qualified practitioner once.

Because these Ayurvedic practices are very powerful. Where they can benefit the body, they can also cause harm if done incorrectly.

Preparation (Purvakarma):

• Snehana & Swedana:

- Gently massage your head, neck, and shoulders with a little warm oil (like sesame or coconut).

- Follow this with a warm shower or by placing a warm towel on your face to open up the channels. This is crucial.

Main Procedure (Pradhana Karma):

• Lie down on your back without a pillow.

• Using a dropper, instill 2-3 drops of lukewarm Anu Tailam (or plain sesame oil if Anu Tailam is not available) into each nostril.

• Inhale gently as you put the drops in. Do not snort forcefully.

• Gently massage the bridge of your nose and your sinuses.

Aftercare (Paschat Karma):

• Stay lying down for a minute.

• Sit up slowly and spit out any oil that has drained into your throat.

• Gargle with warm water.

• The text advises a specific schedule: do this for seven days, with a gap of two days between sessions (e.g., Monday, Thursday, Sunday, etc.).

Lifestyle During Nasya (Samyak):

"рдиिрд╡ाрддोрд╖्рдгрд╕рдоाрдЪाрд░ी рд╣िрддाрд╢ी рдиिрдпрддेрди्рдж्рд░िрдпः ।"

 (Charak Samhita, Sutrasthanam 5/70)

During this period, follow these rules:

• Stay in a warm, draft-free place.

• Eat light, warm, and easy-to-digest foods (follow a pathya diet).

• Practice sense control—avoid excessive screen time, loud noises, and stress.

Importance of Nasya :

1) To Remove Brain Fog

- Many people have this problem:even though the brain is active, they can't focus on their work.
-  We are conscious but not aware. This is called brain fog.
- Two drops of Nasya oilbefore your morning tea will keep the brain active and the senses sharp.

2) It is servicing for your head.

- Just like we change a car's oil to improve its performance,in the same way, Nasya helps keep problems like headaches and grey hair away.

3) When your nose is blocked, put Nasya oil.

-It acts as a natural decongestant, reducing the need to take medicine again and again.

4) Increases the power of eyes, ears, and nose.
- Just like cleaning a camera lens gives a clear photo,Nasya sharpens your senses.

5) Reduces stress

- When your head feels light and cool, tension automatically reduces.

- It's like a massage for a pressure point.

In short

- Just 2 minutes of daily Nasya can help keep you healthy, young, and active for a long time.
- You can make it a part of your daily routine with an expert's advice.

Do's & Don'ts Of Nasya :

Do's:

1. Choose the right time:

- Perform Nasya in the morning on an empty stomach, before bathing. It is the best way to keep the mind fresh and focused before going to the office or the day-long stress.

2. Use warm oil:

- Only use oil that has been lightly warmed. Cold oil can cause nasal congestion.

3. Mind your posture:

- While administering Nasya, lie down on your back and tilt your head back slightly. Do not do it while scrolling on your mobile or while bent over.

4. Rest calmly
- After putting the drops, lie down quietly for 1-2 minutes and then get up slowly, just like you would after meditation.

5. Gargle:

- After getting up, be sure to gargle with warm water to clear any oil that has drained into the throat.

6. Start with plain oil

- In the beginning, use only plain sesame or coconut oil. Use medicated oil only on the advice of an expert.

Don'ts:

1. Do not do it immediately after meals or tea/coffee:

- Just like you don't get rest immediately after an office meeting ends, the body is busy with digestion right after eating. Maintain a gap of at least 2-3 hours.

2. Do not do it right after bathing:

- If your body is wet after a bath and you are in front of an AC or fan, do not administer Nasya. This can cause a cold.

3. Do not do it after a nap:

- Nasya should not be done immediately after taking a nap during the day, especially after lunch.

4. Do not do it when stressed or angry:

- When the mind is highly stressed or angry, you don't get the full benefit of Nasya. Calm down first.
5. Do not mix with other therapies:

- Just like running too many apps at once hangs your phone, similarly, do not do Basti (enema) or Virechana (therapeutic purgation) on the same day as Nasya.

6. Avoid during pregnancy and periods:

- The body's nature is different during these times, so do not perform Nasya.

The Scientific View of Nasya: Potential Mechanisms of Action

We have discussed Nasya a lot, but it is very important to consider the scientific perspective. So, let's understand Nasya's mechanisms with modern explanations.

1. The Direct Absorption Route: The Nasal Mucosa & the Blood-Brain Barrier

- The most compelling scientific basis for Nasya lies in the unique physiology of the nasal cavity.

• Highly Vascularized Tissue:

- The nasal mucosa (the lining of the nose) is rich with tiny blood vessels. Medicinal compounds in the oil can be absorbed directly into this bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system and liver metabolism (the "first-pass effect").

- This leads to a faster and more efficient delivery of active compounds.

• The Olfactory Pathway to the Brain:

- This is the most significant potential mechanism.
- The roof of the nasal cavity contains the cribriform plate, a bony structure with tiny openings that allow the olfactory nerve (responsible for smell) to connect directly to the brain.

 • Scientific Rationale:
- It is hypothesized that the lipid-soluble (fat-based) active compounds in medicated oils (like those in Anu Tailam) can travel along this neural pathway, potentially delivering therapeutic agents directly to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain regions like the hypothalamus and limbic system.

-This offers a direct route bypassing the blood-brain barrier, a significant challenge in modern neurology.

2. Neurological and Endocrinological Effects

By potentially accessing the brain directly, Nasya may influence key systems:

· Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation:
- The nasal passage is innervated by the trigeminal nerve, a major cranial nerve. The gentle massage and application of oil may stimulate this nerve, which has connections to areas of the brainstem involved in regulating headache, blood flow, and relaxation.

· Limbic System Modulation:

- The limbic system is the brain's center for emotions, memory, and behavior. The direct olfactory pathway suggests Nasya could have a modulating effect on this system, potentially explaining its traditional use for mental clarity (brain fog) and stress reduction.

· Pituitary Gland Influence:

- The hypothalamus and pituitary gland (the master gland of the body) are located close to the cribriform plate.
- It is theorized that Nasya could potentially exert a regulatory influence on the endocrine system, though this is a more advanced area for research.

3. Local Mechanical & Protective Actions

· Barrier Function:
- The oil creates a thin lipid (fat) layer inside the nasal passages. This can act as a protective barrier, trapping inhaled allergens, dust, and pathogens (viruses, bacteria) before they can enter the respiratory tract.
- This aligns with its traditional use for preventing allergies and sinusitis.

· Mucolytic and Decongestant Action

- Warm oil can help loosen thick, sticky mucus (phlegm or Kapha), making it easier to drain and clear the sinus passages. This provides a logical explanation for its use as a "natural decongestant.

· Lubrication
- It prevents excessive dryness of the nasal mucosa, which is common in air-conditioned, dry, or polluted environments.

 - Dry mucosa is more susceptible to cracking, infection, and bleeding.

4. Pharmacological Actions of Herbs

The herbs in classical preparations like Anu Tailam are not random; they have known phytochemical properties:

· Anti-inflammatory:

- Herbs like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Bala (Sida cordifolia), and Yashtimadhu (Licorice) contain compounds that can reduce inflammation, potentially alleviating sinusitis and headaches.

· Antioxidant:
- Many herbs, including Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) and Vacha (Acorus calamus), are rich in antioxidants that protect neural tissues from oxidative stress, a factor in aging and neurodegeneration.

· Nootropic & Neuroprotective

Herbs like Brahmi are extensively studied for their cognitive-enhancing (nootropic) and neuroprotective effects, supporting the claim of improved mental clarity.

· Antimicrobial:
- Oils like Sesame oil itself and herbs like Neem have demonstrated antimicrobial properties, supporting the practice's role in preventing infections.

Conclusion from a Scientific Viewpoint:

- Nasya is not just superstition.

- It is a sophisticated targeted drug delivery system that leverages unique human anatomy.
- The mechanisms of direct nasal absorption and the olfactory nerve pathway provide a strong scientific rationale for its traditional uses.

- While more rigorous clinical research is needed to validate its efficacy for specific conditions, the existing pharmacological knowledge of its herbal ingredients and the clear anatomical pathways make it a compelling subject for modern scientific exploration.

- It represents a confluence of ancient wisdom and plausible, cutting-edge neuro-biological science.

Final Words :

Nowadays, we have become so modern that we don't even know where we are using our senses. Unknowingly, we are using our senses in (a flood of) information, pollution, and stress.

Many people don't even realize that they are just passing through life, but the real joy is in living life. This is where Ayurveda comes in.

Obviously, it is a science, but along with that, Ayurveda also teaches you how to live life... it teaches you to connect with nature. Very few people get to know about this... and I am very happy that the readers who read my blogs, and I myself, am getting to know Ayurveda.

So, in the end, I will just say this: learn to live life. It doesn't matter which field you are in, it doesn't matter where you belong. The only thing that matters is how clearly you know yourself.
